EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging
The generated 3D images of the EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging can clearly show the spine, hip and knee joints to help the specialists in examining, diagnosing and treating conditions such as scoliosis and leg length discrepancy. The EOS system has much less radiation exposure (50-85% less) as compared with traditional X-rays, making it safe for children.
As the third EOS imaging system in Hong Kong and the first to utilise it in private healthcare service, HKAI is proud to introduce the EOS system with our venture into the private market. Simply put, the EOS imaging system is a pioneer in the area of spine and lower limb X-ray screening technology. The patented technology of the EOS imaging system was awarded the Nobel Prize, as it reduces radiation exposure by 50-85% as compared with traditional X-rays, and up to 95% as compared with CT scans. The EOS imaging machine can simultaneously take full-body, frontal and lateral images of the skeletal system of a patient in a standing position, allowing the doctor to analyse the patient’s static gait and posture. A detailed 3D 1:1 model can be generated in just 20 seconds of scanning. According to the “As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA)” guiding principle, radiation exposure should be kept as low as possible, while improving image quality and being able to provide 3D models. According to this principle, the EOS imaging system will be an integral part of the future of X-ray technology.
HKAI is the only healthcare centre in Hong Kong equipped with the EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging.
The EOS X-ray machine, based on a Nobel prize-winning invention in physics in the field of particle detection, combines with innovative linear scanning technology. It is capable of simultaneous capture of biplanar X-ray images by slot scanning of the whole body to generate a 3D image of the bones using low radiation doses. It is particularly useful for places like the spine, hip and knee joints. EOS imaging enables our specialists to provide a better diagnosis, evaluation, and comprehensive treatment plan for the patients, as the imaging technology can better reflect the condition of the bones in different circumstances such as when sitting, standing or crouching.
Procedures
The EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging takes only 7 seconds to capture an image, which is 3 times faster than the conventional screening system, making the screening procedure simpler and faster. The system can automatically generate a 3D image while the patient remains in an upright posture. This enables the doctor to evaluate the condition of patients more accurately for developing plans for conservative treatment or surgery. As the system is capable of simultaneous capture of the frontal and lateral view of the body without repeated shots, the patients can be exposed to lower radiation doses. The EOS system delivers 60-90% less radiation as compared with traditional X-rays.
Scoliosis Assessment
Scoliosis concerns about 3% of the population in Hong Kong, with the majority of young people aged 10 to 15 years old. Since the abnormal twist may bring you numerous complications, it is crucial to detect and treat it as early as possible. The EOS imaging system recently introduced in Hong Kong provides scoliosis scanning that delivers much less radiation exposure as compared with traditional X-rays. The technology gives a highly accurate view of the musculoskeletal system in seconds, helping doctors diagnose scoliosis more effectively.
EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging is a French X-ray technology based on the Nobel prize-winning invention in physics in the field of particle detection, combined with innovative linear scanning technology. It is capable of simultaneous capture of frontal and lateral images by slot scanning of the whole body to generate a 3D image of the bones using low radiation doses. The data received is analysed and processed by software to transform the data from 2D to 3D, giving a comprehensive evaluation of the bone condition of patients. This allows our medical team to have a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s condition, including whether there are abnormalities in the hip and lower knee joint that result in scoliosis. This one-stop scoliosis screening enables our specialists to provide a better diagnosis, evaluation, and comprehensive treatment plan for the patients in a more comprehensive manner.
